The challenge with these peaks is the scale — at 7,120 m and 6,309 m, they dwarf anything in the foreground. Lohajung — The Gateway to Ali Bedni Bugyal

Lohajung is a small village at 7,700 feet (2,350 m) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It serves as the base camp for multiple treks in the region, including Ali Bedni Bugyal, Brahmatal, and Roopkund trek. Despite being the starting point for significant treks, Lohajung remains a small, quiet mountain village with basic guesthouses, a few shops, and one BSNL-connected mobile signal zone. There is no ATM in Lohajung — withdraw cash in Tharali (the last town with ATM access before Lohajung).

By Air — Nearest Airports

There are two main airports you can use to reach the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek base camp: Lohajung village

Pantnagar Airport (Uttarakhand) —This is the closest airport to Lohajung via Kathgodam. It is about 35 km from Kathgodam. Flights are limited and mostly connect from Delhi. If available, this option saves travel time compared to Dehradun.

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED) — This is the most commonly used airport for the trek. It has better flight connections from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. From the airport, you can take a taxi to Dehradun city and then join your trekking group from the pickup point.

By Train — Nearest Railway Stations

Kathgodam Railway Station The nearest railway station to reach Lohajung is Kathgodam Railway Station, which is about 220 km away. It is well connected to major cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and other northern Indian cities.

Trains from Delhi to Kathgodam:

Ranikhet Express — Overnight train, reaches early morning
Shatabdi Express (via Moradabad) — Day train option
Uttaranchal Express — Another overnight option

Dehradun / Haridwar/ Rishikesh Railway Station is the alternative — 275 km from Lohajung but connected to more cities including Mumbai and Bengaluru via Delhi. Trains like the Shatabdi Express (from Delhi, 5 hrs) and Nanda Devi Express (overnight) are the most used.

By Bus — Bus Routes to Lohajung

You can also reach Lohajung by bus, but it takes more time and may require changing buses.

From Haldwani / Kathgodam

KMOU buses run from Haldwani (near Kathgodam) towards Wan village, which is the nearest bus point to Lohajung. From Wan, Lohajung is about 5 km away and can be reached by shared taxi or sometimes by walking.

Buses are also available from Haldwani to Gwaldam or Tharali, and from there you can take a shared taxi to Lohajung.

From Rishikesh

From Rishikesh, you can take a bus to Karnaprayag or Chamoli. From there, local taxis or shared jeeps are available to reach Lohajung via Tharali and Dewal.

From Dehradun

From Dehradun, you first need to travel to Rishikesh by bus, and then follow the same route towards Karnaprayag or Gwaldam. This route is longer and involves multiple changes.

Travel Note

Bus travel is the cheapest option, but it is slower and less comfortable due to multiple changes. Most trekkers prefer Tour operator-arranged shared taxis or private vehicles for a more comfortable journey.

By Road — Route from Kathgodam to Lohajung

Kathgodam → Ranibagh → Almora → Kausani → Baijnath → Gwaldam → Tharali → Lohajung Distance: 220 km | Drive time: 10–11 hours

This is the most commonly used and scenically extraordinary route to Lohajung. Key highlights:

Kausani (approximately 100 km from Kathgodam): The famous viewpoint overlooking Nanda Devi and the Trishul-Nanda Ghunti range. If your vehicle makes a stop here, spend 15 minutes at the viewpoint — the same peaks you'll be walking towards are visible from here on clear days.
Baijnath Temple (near Bageshwar): A collection of ancient Shiva temples on the Gomati River banks — worth a brief stop.
Gwaldam: The last significant town before Lohajung. Last petrol station, last urban ATM option. Stock up on any supplies here.
Tharali to Lohajung (40 km): The most dramatic section of the drive — a narrow mountain road above the Pindar River gorge. Beautiful but requiring an experienced driver.

By Road — Route from Rishikesh to Lohajung base camp

Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar Garhwal → Rudraprayag → Chamoli → Nandprayag → Gwaldam → Tharali → Lohajung Distance: 275 km | Drive time: 11–12 hours

This route passes through the sacred Alaknanda River valley and the major Garhwal confluences. It is longer than the Kathgodam route but passes through Chamoli district's main towns and is well-maintained.

From Chamoli, the route joins the Kathgodam route at Tharali/ Dewal continues identically to Lohajung.

Driving or Hiring a Cab

The route from Gwaldam → Tharali → Lohajung goes through narrow mountain roads. It is important to have an experienced hill driver for this section.

Local drivers from Gwaldam or Tharali are often more familiar with these roads and are safer for the final stretch compared to drivers from the plains.

Rishikesh (Natraj Chock/ Tapovan Bus Stand) — If you are joining from Rishikesh, pickup is arranged from Tapovan, and it may take around 1 extra hour of travel time to reach the Dehradun route.

We recommend all trekkers to confirm their pickup point, exact timing, and vehicle details at least 48 hours before the trek starts. This helps avoid any confusion on the travel day.

Please also keep your trek guide’s phone number saved. Once you start the mountain drive, the mobile network may become weak or unavailable in some areas.

Inclusions & Exclusions

Accommodation: Clean and hygienic stay on double / triple / quad sharing basis (hotels, guesthouses, camps, or cottages as per package).

Note: In Gunji and Nabi, only 5- or 6-sharing rooms are available due to limited infrastructure.

Meals: 6 breakfasts and 6 dinners, featuring a wholesome vegetarian North Indian menu.

Transportation:

Haldwani ↔ Dharchula – Comfortable road transfer as per the chosen itinerary. Vehicles include Dzire, Ertiga, Innova, Bolero, or Tempo Traveller (Note: AC is not operated in hilly regions).
Dharchula ↔ Dharchula (Yatra Route) – 4×4 cabs (Bolero / Scorpio) for rugged mountain terrain.

Experienced Team:

Knowledgeable tour guide for assistance throughout the yatra.
Mountain-trained driver with expertise in Himalayan roads.

Other Inclusions:

All parking fees, toll taxes, fuel charges, and driver allowances.

Warm Layers: A good quality fleece/jacket and thermals (temperatures drop suddenly at night in Gunji, Kuti, and Nabhi).
Down Jacket/Windproof: Essential for chilly mornings near Adi Kailash and Om Parvat.
T-shirts & Trek Pants: Quick-dry fabrics are better than cotton, as they wick moisture and dry faster.
Rain Protection: Lightweight raincoat/poncho + backpack cover (showers are common in the mountains).
Comfortable Nightwear: For guesthouse/homestay stays.

Footwear & Accessories

Trekking Shoes: Sturdy, ankle-support shoes with good grip for uneven terrain.
Light Sandals/Slippers: Useful in villages and for evening wear.
